Tips to improve your productivity in 2018

2018 is well underway, but if you’re anything like me, you’ll still be wondering how you can improve the way you work this year.

It’s impossible to master the art of being productive, but you can always improve the way you get stuff done. The key lies in deciding how you’ll be more productive each year, because there’s always a new technique or app on the horizon that can inspire you to do more.

In this post, I’m going to list a few of the things I’ll be doing this year to improve my productivity, and I think they could help you, too.

Delegate more often

Hands up – I’m not very good at delegation. And that isn’t because I don’t trust people to do as good a job as myself – far from it. It’s because I struggle to let go of things I’ve done for quite some time.

This year will be different. I’m surrounded by helpful people, and for that reason, I’m going to ensure I give them the jobs that take up more of my own time than is strictly necessary.

Ditch the laptop and go analogue

Analogue life is making something of a comeback, with people swapping digital devices and techniques for those of a bygone era.

Recently, I’ve applied this thinking to the way I work, and it has had amazing results. The benefits of analogue working are numerous, but the creative freedom, tactile experience and removal of digital distractions has helped immeasurably.

Only do what you can measure

It might sound obvious, but motivation is the key to staying productive.

Motivation can only come from one place – results you can measure, therefore it’s important to make a habit of checking the net effect or impact of the tasks you undertake.

Once you start checking progress, you’ll be able to know whether or not the effort you put in is producing a decent outcome, and when you realise it is, you’ll be inspired to do more!

Accept that your day rarely pans out the way you intend

Since I’ve ran my own micro business, I’ve realised that days rarely – if ever – pan out the way I intend. And, for a long time, this bothered me.

Inevitably, life often takes over, and factors beyond your control will always do their level best to quash any plans you had to get as much done within an eight hour day.

Now, I accept that days rarely go to plan, but focus on the ability I have to work whenever I need to. So, if a Thursday afternoon goes to pot because a meeting overruns, I start work a little earlier the next day. In the end, it all works out!

Keep the grey matter sharp

If your brain isn’t sharp, you’ll have trouble remembering what you’re doing and motivation will be hard to come by.

By getting enough exercise, taking plenty of breaks and maintaining a balanced, healthy diet, the grey matter in your head will be tuned for maximum productivity. It doesn’t cost a penny, either – just a good dose of determination.
